can we melt the ice is one of those mystery records that collectors love so dearly. very little is known about it, other than that it appeared on plush records sometime around 1982 or 83. it was written and produced by chicago producer morris j williams, whose sweet vocal provides a vocal point for the track s sensual boogie vibes - all lilting horns, subtle synthesizers and shuffling grooves. brilliantly, this reissue from finlands constantly on-point traveller records also boasts a previously unreleased longer version, which naturally extends the tracks wonderful instrumentation in all the right places. recommended.

a year and a half after black merlin (george thompson) opened the common thread series with the much praised new world fantasy / ice house release george sent over some adventurous bits for a follow up and we were immediately sold. george is a true artist in his own right. all of the black merlin tracks evoke different sentiments. this time around the feeling it bring up is very conflicted. both tracks have those dark aesthetics with elements of paranoia and both also share some apocalyptic elements. it is for this reason that this is the perfect follow up for ct01. instead of just releasing music on vinyl we (with the blessings of zoroaster) are looking to evoke spirits, cross boundaries and maintain quality. major cliches, but with an artist like black merlin on your books, cliches sometimes become truth.

london-based artist the room below follows 2014’s dba debut (as part of the 015.5 v/a release) with a mixture of classic and experimental house sounds. born in bristol, raised in dorset and residing in the capital, henry keen aka the room below has been djing and collecting vinyl for over 20 years. as soundspecies alongside his brother he was championed by gilles peterson’s worldwide show and london institution cdr. the alias ‘the room below” was coined to coincide with henry’s analogue re-working of close friend paul white’s ‘rapping with’ lp. since then he has maintained this alias for his house and techno composition. they pay homage to the legendary chicago and detroit artists that inspired him back in the 80’s and 90’s.

das prignitzkombinat ist zurueck mit einem neuen release ihres labels zum eigenen club, dem aggregat. nach dem sehr guten ersten release auf aggregat concept series mit dem schwerpunkt techno, rückt mit dieser veroeffentlichung house in den vordergrund. funk fetisch liefert hier mit dieser ep zwei feine tracks seiner definition von house ab. der track >gotta get down< zeigt deutlich seine einfluesse aus den verschiedenen genres des klassischen housesounds, typische skippy beats, jazzy chords und discofilter loops bilden hier das house. bei >black is beautiful< behaelt funk fetisch diesen charakter, allerdings wirkt alles insgesamt moderner. groovige beats und eine tiefe bassline bilden das bett für atmosphaerische warme pads, akzentuierte chords und verspielte melodielaeufe. james johnstons (no matter what) remix zu >gotta get down< geht direkt in die beine, straight, fokussiert und sehr kraftvoller house, der zeigt, dass der mann aus glasgow sein handwerk aeußerst gut versteht. danke james! p.s.: this ep is dedicated to all the lovely people from the diamond s kitchen in northallerton, uk

for the past few years, young denmark vessey has been releasing a series of albums, both as a leader of carious groups and as a sideman in various others, which definitely mark him as one of the most exciting young players in music. vessey’s last album prior to this (2013’s cult classic) employed scud one for the rhythm section. vessey, in his own playing suggest that he may be forging a link between the new mainstream and prior innovations. it is to vessey’s credit that this album achieves a surprising degree of unity. there is little of the haphazard feeling that too often arrends blowing sessions by pick-up bands. it would be easier to mistake this for a group which works regularly. part of that is simply because vessey is a part of the new mainstream, the part that is seeking beyond the accepted common language to find ways of extending it. the rest is because of vessey’s unusual talent.

the furnace series is a two-part compilation of music inspired by a special room in the montreal apartment shared by booma collective from 2012-2014. when venues to throw parties became scarce, booma used this room leading to the fire escape in the back of the apartment known as the furnace as a space for small gatherings among close friends. the furnace series is a collection of memories of those intimate parties and impromptu jam sessions. part one features four tracks by booma collective founders and friends, beginning with psyche, a hypnotic, dub-techno inspired composition with oscillating, piercing sounds, evoking whistling flurries. solparas garden in the furnace echoes the hollowed-out concrete architecture of the furnace itself, filling up then emptying its atmosphere with layered drum machines and ghostly voices. cf01 is the result of feedback experimentation carefully arranged into a slow tribal jam. oren ratowsky. producer of booma collectives first vinyl release, rounds off the b side with gorby, an eleven and a half minute exploration of his mastery of analog synthesizers.
